Friedrich Wilhelm Gottlieb Lionel von Donop (born July 28, 1844 in Detmold , † November 26, 1912 in Berlin ) was a German art historian .

Life

Lionel von Donop came from a noble family who were in the service of the princes of Lippe. His parents were the captain August von Donop (1812-1846) and Auguste von Donop, née Lorentz (1821-1862). An older brother was the officer and court master Hugo von Donop (1840–1895). Donop graduated from high school in Detmold in 1864 and then studied in Tübingen, Berlin and Göttingen. At the University of Göttingen he received his doctorate in 1868 with a topic on Greek antiquity.

His later residence was in Berlin. Here in 1877 he published the first complete collection of Hoffmann von Fallersleben 's children's songs . Donop worked as an employee of the Berlin National Gallery, where he wrote art historical writings. Known as an excellent expert on the painter Adolf von Menzel , he also wrote around 60 artist biographies for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , mainly on painters from the Berlin School. His last known titles were a biography of Max Jordan and a publication on Carl Blechen .
