Karl Julius Bernhard Mannfeld (born March 6, 1848 in Dresden , † March 29, 1925 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Mannfeld spent his youth in Meissen . As an etcher and painter, he was a student of the painter Otto Georgi. One of his students was Ottilie Roederstein . He worked as a teacher and professor of etching at the Städel in Frankfurt am Main from 1895 . From 1895 he was also director of the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule.

Mannfeld was a representative of the art of etching ( gravure printing ) using copper plate and made landscape and city etchings, but mainly architectural views. In 1886 he had an exhibition of his etchings in the Berlin National Gallery , curated by Lionel von Donop . Drawings by him were in museums in Leipzig , Breslau and Berlin.

A street in Frankfurt am Main was named after him: "Bernard-Mannfeld-Weg" in the Sachsenhausen district. He was also buried in the cemetery in Sachsenhausen, which is now considered an honorary grave. The following family still lives partly in Frankfurt and owns some of his works. Some of his students tried to copy Bernhard Mannfeld and then sell the works, which is why it is often difficult to clearly identify some works.
