Hugo Robert August von Donop (born March 14, 1840 in Detmold , † September 6, 1895 in St. Blasien ) was a German officer , chamberlain , court master and draftsman.

Life

family

Hugo came from the noble family von Donop . He was the first of four children of the princely Lippe captain August von Donop (1812-1846) and his wife Auguste, née Lorentz (1821-1862). A younger brother was Lionel von Donop (1844–1912). Donop married Marie Brüll in 1865.

Career

After pre-school he attended the Leopoldinum grammar school until 1857 . Donop joined the Leib-Regiment of the Hanoverian Army as a cadet on April 20, 1857 . There he was promoted to first lieutenant by the end of May 1961 and graduated from the military academy in Hanover in 1862/65 . Donop had to interrupt his training from December 1863 to October 1864 in order to take part in the federal execution in Holstein . In 1866 he took part in the battle of Langensalza during the war against Prussia and retired from active service on December 30, 1866 after the annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover .

Donop was then taken over into Prussian services and, as Prime Lieutenant, on March 9, 1867, was first aggregated to the 3rd Guards Regiment on foot and was assigned on March 22, 1868. On March 2, 1869 he was promoted to wing adjutant to Prince Leopold III. appointed to Lippe in Detmold . For the duration of the mobilization , Donop was commanded as an adjutant to the Generalgouvernement of Lorraine during the war against France . In this capacity promoted to captain on September 6, 1870 , he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his work during the siege of Toul . After the preliminary peace at Versailles , Donop resumed his work as a wing adjutant on March 20, 1871 and was put on foot à la suite of the 3rd Guards Regiment in mid-June 1871 . After the death of Leopold III. and the handover of the throne to Prince Woldemar took place on February 1, 1876, he was assigned to the Plön Cadet House . After being released from his position as a wing adjutant, Donop was appointed company commander in the cadet house on July 22, 1876 . The following year, he was with promotion to Major of parting with the statutory pension granted and the privilege to wear the uniform.

At the request of Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessen-Rumpenheim , he was now chamberlain to Landgravine Maria Anna . In 1890 Grand Duchess Sophie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach placed him in her service as Chamberlain and Chief Steward at the Weimar court. He filled these positions until his death. He died on September 6, 1895 in St. Blasien as a result of a lung disease.

Others

Hugo von Donop was interested in history and art. Around 1873 he made a series of drawings for Otto Preuß , which Preuss used as the basis for his work “The architectural antiquities of the Lippian land”. Von Donop's interest in genealogy was passed on to his second daughter, Nancy, who continued his work after his death.

In addition, Hugo von Donop was known for his large collection of autographs . His documents by and about Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were shown in the Goethehaus at a Werther exhibition in 1892 . It was therefore a stroke of luck for Hugo von Donop to be able to work for Grand Duchess Sophie, because in 1885 Goethe's family archive was bequeathed to it in his will.
