Donop is the name of one of the oldest Lower Saxon / Lippe noble families from the County of Lippe with the parent company of the same name in the former Donop Bailiwick in today's Lippe district .

history

A Johann von Donop is mentioned as a knight in the service of Volkwin von Schwalenberg as early as 1220 . He first appears in a document on April 14, 1227. The uninterrupted line of trunks begins in 1240 with the knight Lambert von Donop . For Lambert, the connection between name and origin can be traced back to the “Lüdershof” district near the Lippe town of Donop or Altendonop . Since the Middle Ages, numerous members of the family have been vassals and ministerials (e.g. Droste ) of the lords, counts and princes of the Lippe and the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel .

The von Donop were the hereditary castle men of the Lippe Castle Blomberg through the Middle Ages. From the later Wöbbel branch, the brothers Anton and Christoph von Donop were confirmed in that office by Emperor Charles V in a letter of protection in 1548 , recognizing their baronial dignity. Other members of the sex were raised to the count, but left no direct descendants.

In the foreign service Leopold Moritz von Donop was in 1747 by Louis XV. raised to the French count and died in old age childless as Mestre de camp in France.

Coat of arms and genesis of the family

In contrast to the version shown below, one of the old family coats of arms shows a Romanesque, silver shield with a tapering lower edge. The fixed ladder shows the peculiarity of the staggered rung ladder, an indication of the much older origin. However, the typical grappling hook is missing here. The pinnacle tower is bordered on the lower edge with the typical baron crown. The crown attaches a red and silver cloak that surrounds the shield.

Coat of arms with grappling hook and continuous rungs

The more recent coat of arms shown on the right has a shield as its main element, which tapers downwards. It shows a diagonal red pinnacle bar in silver , the simplified form of the fixed ladder, here also without a grappling hook. On the helmet with red and silver covers a silver crenellated tower covered with a red crenellated beam, the red roof of which is covered with three (silver-red-silver) ostrich feathers. In contrast to the Romanesque version, the coat of arms is framed by ornaments on both sides, which, in terms of age, match the shield with the round lower edge and therefore seems coherent.

Another version of the family coat of arms shows the grappling hook mentioned above, which is missing in other versions. The grappling hook, however, is directly related to the rise in the castle wall of Plesse Castle north of Göttingen, on which the origin of the coat of arms is based.

Genesis
  1. The nobles of Lower Saxony - once went to the tournament - the stately knights brought in many a lovely lady.
  2. And at the barriers flashed - even warlike sign after sign, - at old decorations - many new images line up.
  3. The herald checks the coat of arms - strictly according to his art, - even the smallest blemish helps - not even the greatest favor.
  4. The young persevants - stand around in a circle - eagerly making their own - the coat of arms secret doctrine.
  5. If there is a young squire - approaches with a blank shield - was a red ladder - on it the coat of arms
  6. "The one with the red ladder - who is the young fan?" - asks Wernher von der Plesse, - the Cologne cathedral dean.
  7. "That is the red ladder - on which I recently climbed - your castle, the high Plesse," - The warrior spoke and was silent.
  8. "Eh," called the old sword - cheerfully turned towards the young one - "if you took" the steep Plesse - then take my hand too.
  9. You climbed up to my castle with fresh courage - you did it in broad daylight - right like a hero.
  10. You shouted your “do nup” merrily - and stormed forward boldly - and everyone shouted “do nup” - and followed your path
  11. And you should be called Donup - you brave fire brand - the Donup should bloom - throughout the fatherland.
  12. The young man stood modestly - he accepted only hesitantly - that seems too much honor to him - to be for his deed.
  13. In the evening - he won the prize - the emperor knighted - young noble rice.
  14. But Donup was called in the country - after him his whole sex - tried and tested in many quarrels - and bloody battle.
  15. It defies the storm and times - the Donup noble house - and Charles the Fifth made it a baronial one.

The motto of the family is: pectora adversis ponenda rebus (the breast against the odds)

Wöbbel Castle and Manor

In 1550, the Donop family took over the manor in Wöbbel.

The Wöbbel Castle was built in 1690 by the Lippe country Drosten Levin Moritz von Donop and is considered one of the most important Baroque palaces in the district of Lippe. It was formerly surrounded by a rectangular moat that was filled in in 1870.

The manor is still owned by the von Donop family today.

Schötmar Manor and Stietencron Castle

Stietencron Castle

The manor Schötmar was carried out to 1664 Wöbbel derived Colonel justified Simon Moritz of Donop (1613-1676). At the beginning of the 1660s he had acquired the Schötmaraner parish jug (today "Korf") with all its privileges and then additional lands and buildings. In 1664, Simon Moritz von Donop succeeded in obtaining the status of a manor for his property. In 1729 the castle was built by the Swedish and Hessian Minister of State August Moritz Abel Plato von Donop. It served as the manor house of the Schötmar manor.

In 1949 the city of Schötmar took over the park and the castle as an addition. The Bad Salzuflen Music School has been based in Stietencron Castle since 1983 .

Himmighausen Castle

Himmighausen

The formerly encircled complex consists of the manor house and an upstream farm yard . The system was started as a three-wing system for Karl Heinrich von Donop in the first half of the 18th century and extensively rebuilt around 1890. A voluminous mansard hipped roof was added to the single-storey house on a high base. The building is plastered and structured by grooved corner pilasters. A wide terrace with stairs leads to the landscaped garden. On the symmetrical farm yard there are two gate pavilions with a tent roof from the end of the 17th century and two former stable buildings with a gabled central projection and a passage. The one on the left is marked 1720, the one on the right with Donop and shields . The three- arched coach house with a fascinating goal frame and figural keystones was built at the end of the 17th century.

Himmighausen Castle was inherited from the Counts of Oeynhausen to the von Puttkamer family in the 20th century , who use it privately today.
