Nigel De Brulier
Nigel De Brulier (born July 8, 1877 in Bristol , England , † January 30, 1948 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British actor who starred in almost 120 films between 1916 and 1943.
life and career
Nigel De Brulier began his career as a stage actor in England. Eventually he moved to the United States and made his first film there in 1914. De Brulier quickly became a successful character actor, who often played bishops, judges or other figures of authority with his striking appearance. He was mainly seen in literary adaptations. In the 1920s he played supporting roles in some of the most important American films of the time, such as Bishop Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame alongside Lon Chaney Sr. and as the Israeli administrator Simonides in the silent film version of Ben Hur . His best-known role was the French Cardinal Richelieu , whom he played in four films: The Three Musketeers (1921), The Iron Mask (1929), The Three Musketeers (1935) and The Man with the Iron Mask (1939).
Nigel De Brulier was able to continue his career after the start of the sound film in the late 1920s, unlike many other acting colleagues, but his roles became increasingly smaller and he was more often not mentioned in the credits . He had minor supporting roles in period films such as Escape from Paris , Mary of Scotland and Marie-Antoinette . In 1939 he played the escaped murderer Selden in an almost silent appearance in the crime classic The Dog of Baskerville , which for De Brulier was a departure from his otherwise mostly high-ranking role figures. Perhaps his last more important role was in 1941 as the old magician Shazam with a long, white beard in the film series Adventures of Captain Marvel .
In 1943 he ended his film career after around 120 films and withdrew into private life. He died in 1948 at the age of 70 and was buried in the Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale .
