Nikolaus Adler

Nikolaus Adler (born January 19, 1902 in Viernheim , † January 30, 1970 in Mainz ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

Nikolaus Adler studied philosophy and theology at the Philosophical-Theological University in Mainz from 1921 to 1924 . On March 20, 1926, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Ludwig Maria Hugo in Mainz Cathedral . After that he was chaplain of the Marienschule in Mainz. From 1928 to 1930 he studied in Rome at the Collegio Teutonico di Santa Maria dell'Anima and Biblical Exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute . In 1930 the Biblical Institute awarded him a licentiate in biblical studies (lic. Bibl.). From September 1930 Adler worked as a chaplain in the parish of St. Fidelis in Darmstadt. From April 1932 he was released again to study, this time at the University of Münster . There he was with a 1935 Max Meinertz supervised dissertation on the meaning and significance of Pentecost report (Acts 2.1 to 13) PhD .

In December 1935, Adler became an assistant at the seminary of the diocese of Mainz , where he received a teaching position for biblical exegesis at Easter 1936. In 1943 he was appointed prosynodal examinator.

In 1944 Adler became a professor at the Philosophical-Theological University in Mainz. With the opening of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1946, the professors of the Philosophical-Theological University were integrated as teachers in the department of Catholic theology of the newly founded university. As a result, Adler was Professor of the New Testament at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1946 to 1967 . From 1952 to 1954 he was Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty.

Until 1957, Nikolaus Adler worked on a revision of the Klosterneuburg Bible, which became known as the “Mainz New Testament”.

Honors

On December 21, 1951, Adler received the honorary title of clergyman .
