Alexandre Abel de Pujol
Alexandre Abel de Pujol , actually Alexandre-Denis Abel (born January 30, 1785 in Valenciennes , † September 29, 1861 in Paris ) was a classical French history painter .
Career
Abel was born the son of Alexandre-Denis Joseph Pujol de Mortry, baron de La Grave (1737-1816), who had founded the École supérieure d'art et de design de Valenciennes in his hometown in northeastern France in 1783. He received his first artistic training in Valenciennes from the painter Jacques-François Momal (1754-1832). In Paris he then studied with Jacques Louis David (1748–1825). In 1810 de Pujol was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for his painting Jacob blessing the children of Joseph and in 1814 for the death of Britannicus with the first medal. For his sermon on St. Stephen's in the parish church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris, he received the award of the Paris Salon . Abel de Pujol received numerous public commissions for large-format wall and ceiling paintings, including in the Palais du Louvre , the Palais Bourbon and the Sainte-Sulpice church .
On January 22nd, 1814 he married Marie-Claudine Legrand, with whom he had four sons: Adolphe, Gustave (painter in Algeria), Alexandre the Elder. J. (history painter) and Raphaël (civil servant in the French cultural administration). He married his second wife, his former student Adrienne Grandpierre-Deverzy , on April 2, 1856.
