Hermann Brandt (settler)

Hermann Brandt (born October 5, 1856 in Porta Westfalica , often incorrectly stated as 1858 ; † January 30, 1925 in Lüderitz , sometimes incorrectly stated as January 13th ) was a German settler , on whom the emergence of the city of Mariental in today's Namibia and what was then German South West Africa . Mariental developed from Hermann Brandt's farm , which he named after his wife Anna Maria Brandt, née. Mähler had named.

Brandt was a farmer and was the first German settlers in the region of present-day Mariental.

In 1894 Hermann Brandt married Anna Maria Mähler . In the same year that migrated couple to Africa and arrived Christmas Eve , first in South Africa Taung on. From there they moved on to southern German South West Africa, where Hermann Brandt from the captain of the Orlam , Hendrik Witbooi , acquired the Guiganabis farm . Guiganabis was renamed "Mariental" by Hermann Brandt after his wife's nickname . The town of Mariental gradually emerged in the vicinity of this farm.

At the end of the 1890s, 15 German soldiers were stationed on the Mariental farm and a police station was set up shortly afterwards. Shortly after the foundation stone was laid for a church in 1920, the settlement was officially elevated to the status of the village of Mariental. In 1946 it was elevated to the status of town. Today the city is the administrative center, agricultural and commercial center of the central south of Namibia.

The Brandt couple had a son, Percy Brandt (1898–1986) .
