Wolfgang Spanier

Wolfgang Spanier (born January 30, 1943 in Münster / Westphalia ; † April 18, 2018 in Herford ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Münster in 1962, Spanier completed a teaching degree in philosophy and German at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, which he completed with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools. From 1969 he worked as a teacher and from 1989 to 1994 he was the headmaster of the Marianne-Weber-Gymnasium in Lemgo .

Wolfgang Spanier was married and had two children. He died on April 18, 2018 at the age of 75 in Herford.

Political activity

Spanier joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1975.

From 1984 to 1994 Spanier was a member of the Herford City Council . From 1994 to 2009 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1998 to 2005 he was deputy spokesman for the transport, construction and housing working group of the SPD parliamentary group . Since 2005, Spanier has been deputy spokesman for the parliamentary group's working group on distributive justice and social integration .

Wolfgang Spanier has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Herford constituency or, since 2002, of the Herford - Minden-Lübbecke II constituency . In the 2005 Bundestag election , he received 47.5% of the first votes .

In the 2009 Bundestag election, Wolfgang Spanier did not stand for election again and therefore left the Bundestag. His successor as directly elected constituency member was Stefan Schwartze (SPD).

Since 2010, Wolfgang Spanier has headed the Foundation and Remembrance Board of Trustees in Herford, which operates the Zellentrakt memorial . In 2016 he was replaced as chairman by Friedels Böhse.
