Henri Duvernois (actually: Henri Simon Schwabacher , born March 4, 1875 in Paris , † January 30, 1937 there ) was a French writer.

The son of a Hungarian diamond dealer and a Dutch woman began working as a secretary in the Bibliothèque Charpentier at the age of seventeen . As a journalist he then wrote for magazines such as Le Journal , Le Matin , Fémina , Comoedia , Candide and L'Illustration , where he soon published novels on a recommendation by Catulle Mendès .

His first great success as a writer was in 1908 with the novel Crapotte . In 1910 he married Margaretha Liebmann , who worked as a circus artist and actress under the name Rita del Erido .

He suffered an injury during World War I and then worked as a nurse at Villa Molière . There he met Guillaume Apollinaire , with whom he remained in contact by letter until his death. About his war experiences he published the novel Edgar in 1919 , which André Breton called one of the most surrealistic novels in the world.

In 1921 Sacha Guitry edited his novella Morte la Bête for the stage. As a result, successful one-act plays such as La Dame de Bronze et le Monsieur de cristal ou Seul were created in collaboration between the two . Since 1922 he became friends with the actress Gaby Morlay , for whom he adapted and produced his play Jeanne as a film.

Altogether, about twenty films were made between 1920 and 1950 based on his books. From the early 1930s he wrote several great novels, including the fantastic story L'Homme qui s'est retrouvé .

The also financially successful author owned a villa in Antibes, where fellow writers such as Marcel Proust , Jean Cocteau , Rachilde , Edmond Jaloux and Maurice Donnay , the actress Mistinguett , the singer Dranem , the painter Kees van Dongen and others were guests. He was honored as commander of the Legion of Honor and in 1933 received the Grand Prix de Littérature . In 1937 he died of a stomach ailment and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery next to Oscar Wilde and Georges Courteline .
