Usko Aatos Meriläinen (born January 30, 1930 in Tampere , † November 12, 2004 ibid) was a Finnish composer and conductor of modernism .

Meriläinen is an important representative of Finnish post-war modernism. In the 1970s he experimented with electronic music . According to his own statements, the starting point for his experiments was the ballet Sacre du Printemps by Igor Stravinsky . Von Meriläinen has published great orchestral works, chamber music and compositions primarily for piano and violin. His works can be assigned to neoclassicism , twelve-tone music and post- serialism .

From 1954 to 1956 Meriläinen directed the Finnish Opera Choir and from 1956 to 1957 the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra. In 1986 he founded the Avant-Garde Music Festival Tampere Biennale, which he directed until 2000.

In 1965 he was awarded the Wihuri Sibelius Prize .
