David Denicke

David Denicke (born January 30, 1603 in Zittau , † April 1, 1680 in Hanover ) was a German lawyer and hymn poet .

Life

Denicke studied law and philosophy in Wittenberg and Jena . In Königsberg he was a private lecturer . He traveled to Holland , England and France in the years 1625 to 1628 . In 1629 he became court master of the sons of Duke Georg (Braunschweig-Calenberg) in Herzberg (Harz) . He became abbot of Bursfelde monastery in 1639, councilor in 1640 and consistorial councilor in Hanover two years later . Justus Geseniuspublished in 1646 together with David Denicke a hymn book intended for private devotion , from which the Hanoverian hymn book (published 1659) later emerged. Conrad Christian Heinemann said in his funeral sermon at Denicke in 1680, “that he wrote witty psalms through God's help / which are sung in public among us”. Some songs from the Hanover hymnbook are still sung today.

David Denicke married Magdalene Elisabeth von Windheim on December 5, 1643 in the Marktkirche . The family came into possession of the Evensen manor in 1714 . Moritz von Denicke is one of the descendants .
