The Flensburg harbor crane was built in 1726 at the request of the Flensburger Schiffergelage (captains) by the city of Flensburg next to the shipyard (now a museum shipyard ) at the Flensburg harbor .
It was used exclusively for rigging (setting the mast) and fetching the keel . So it wasn't a typical harbor crane . At that time, Flensburg belonged to Denmark , which traded with the West Indies (especially the island of Saint Croix ). Even today there are numerous public and private buildings made of yellow brick on the island; at that time they were carried as ballast by the gliders. This crane was probably dismantled in 1899.
For the reconstruction of the crane, watercolors from 1795 and 1838 were used, but above all a plate photograph from 1890. With the resulting drawing, the crane was rebuilt in 1991. The entire museum shipyard was rebuilt in 2001.
