Carl Merz

Carl Merz (actually Carl Czell ; born January 30, 1906 in Kronstadt , Transylvania , † October 31, 1979 in Vienna ) was an Austrian cabaret artist and writer .

Life

Merz studied world trade in Vienna . In 1928 he completed his studies with a degree in business administration and turned to the theater and cabaret, where he appeared as an actor and emcee and wrote his own texts. From 1945 he played at Lieben Augustin , whose director he was for a year.

Merz was a member of the cabaret group known as the Nameless Ensemble alongside Gerhard Bronner , Helmut Qualtinger , Louise Martini , Peter Wehle , Georg Kreisler , Michael Kehlmann and others. The one-person piece Der Herr Karl played by Qualtinger and the Travnicek dialogues that he wrote with Helmut Qualtinger, played by Qualtinger and Bronner, have not only gone down in Austrian cabaret history.

Merz took his own life in Vienna in 1979 because he was terminally ill after two strokes . His final resting place, an honorary grave , is in group 40, number 135 at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
