Bregenz directional hearing

The Bregenz directional hearing is a special method of sound technology , which in the open-air events of the Bregenz Festival is used. This ensures that the performers acting on the world's largest floating stage are localized acoustically and visually by the audience .

Based on the precedent effect ( Haas effect or law of the first wave front), which gives the human ear the direction of the sound, the Bregenz directional hearing was developed. This first sound wave is ideally the original sound of the performer , or alternatively the sound wave from the directional loudspeakers, which take into account the positioning of the singer and acoustically clarify his position . If loudspeakers distributed across the entire stage are now switched on with a time delay (approx. 10 to 100 milliseconds) and with a correspondingly radiating sound level, the impression should arise in the entire audience area that the sound is only coming from where the soloist is standing.

If the performers move, a sound engineer causes the sound to move along with the singers by playing the same or different speakers with new time delay times. Each individual loudspeaker can be controlled relatively quietly. By the summation of all the speakers is still achieving the desired overall volume.
