Anton Spitalsky

Anton Spitalsky (born December 8, 1831 - January 30, 1909 ) was the technical director of the Austrian Arms Factory (ÖWG).

life and work

Spitalsky first worked as a gunsmith in kk stuff artillery in Vienna Arsenal , but resigned in 1866 as a foreman in the Werndlsche arms factory in Steyr one. Together with Karl Holub , he developed improvements to the Werndl rifle in 1873 . In 1879 he designed a multi-loading rifle with a rotating drum magazine. In 1885 he became inspector of the ÖWG and, after Werndl's death, technical director from 1889 to 1896. An executive committee took the place of the general director. In 1890, Spitalsky, as the agent of the arms factory, negotiated with a committee of twelve workers the clearance of May 1st .

The city of Steyr was the universal heir to his fortune of 365,000 crowns.

Aftermath

Spitalsky received a grave of honor in the second section of the Tabor cemetery . The former Neuluststrasse, where Spitalsky and his wife Emilie owned a villa, was renamed Spitalskystrasse. The Spitalskyvilla was demolished in 1978 and the district office building of the Chamber of Labor was erected in its place in 1980 .
