Karl Holub
Karl Holub (born January 26, 1830 in Stradonitz , † March 23, 1903 in Steyr ) was a Bohemian weapons technician .
Life
After training as an armorer and military service in Vienna, he joined Arsenal in 1857 in the Josef Werndl machinery plants in Steyr , where he was foreman in 1861 and the first breech-loading rifles developed. After an extensive study trip to arms factories in the USA , Holub developed a groundbreaking lock in 1866, the so-called " tabernacle lock ", which enabled significantly faster reloading. The rifle was soon used as the "Werndl rifle" by the Austro-Hungarian Army and was in use until the end of the Second World War . Although the fame for the development went to Werndl, he made Holub the technical director of the Österreichische Waffenfabriks AG and gave him a generous share in income and patent rights. In 1874 Holub was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order , a decoration that otherwise only officers were entitled to.
Karl Holub is buried in a crypt at the Taborfriedhof in Steyr.
