Karel Boleslav Jirák (also: Karel Bohuslav Jirák) (born January 28, 1891 in Prague , † January 30, 1972 in Chicago ) was a Czech composer and conductor .

Jirák was a student of Josef Bohuslav Foerster and Vítězslav Novák at the Charles University in Prague and the Prague Music Academy. From 1915 to 1918 he was Kapellmeister of the Hamburg Opera and from 1918 to 1919 he also worked as a conductor at the National Theater in Brno and Mährisch Ostrau . From 1920 to 1930 he was a composition teacher at the Prague Conservatory , then until 1945 chief conductor of the Czech Radio .

In 1947 he emigrated to the USA , where he was professor at Roosevelt University in Chicago from 1948 to 1967 . In 1967 he became a composition teacher at Conservatory College , also in Chicago . He held this position until 1971.

Jirák composed an opera ( Apollonius z Tyany (Apollonius von Tyana), later under the title Žena a Bůh (A Woman and a God) 1912-13), six symphonies , symphonic variations, 1952 a Symphonic Scherzo for Band, op. 65a , Suites and overtures , numerous chamber music works, preludes , fugues and a suite for organ , a requiem , choirs, song cycles and folk song arrangements. His work Theory of Musical Form appeared in several editions.
