Gottfried Daniel Krummacher came from the Krummacher family from Westphalia. He was the younger brother of Friedrich Adolf Krummacher . After studying theology, he was pastor in Baerl (today: Duisburg ) from 1798 , in Wülfrath from 1801 and then in Elberfeld from 1816.

He was theologically influenced by Friedrich Adolf Lampe and was also considered a moderate predecessor of Hermann Friedrich Kohlbrügges . Through his sermon about the free grace of God, which lacked any pathos, Krummacher became the head of the Lower Rhine awakening movement .
