Hermann Friedrich Kohlbrügge (born August 15, 1803 in Amsterdam , † March 5, 1875 in Elberfeld ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian . He was a pastor at the Dutch Reformed Church in Elberfeld .

Live and act

In Amsterdam, Kohlbrügge attended a school for Latin from 1819 to 1821 and later the Athenaeum . He devoted himself to the study of the Heidelberg Catechism , philosophy , theology and the oriental languages . He also worked for his father in a soap factory . In 1825 he finished a theological exam in Utrecht and in 1826 became assistant preacher in the Amsterdam congregation.

In 1833, after the death of his wife, Kohlbrügge traveled to the Rhineland for a cure and preached in Elberfeld. After returning to the Netherlands , he remarried in 1834. From 1856 Kohlbrügge preached in various Dutch churches and in 1864 traveled to Bohemia and Moravia to preach there too. His theology was strongly influenced by Martin Luther , among others . “In a sermon on Romans 7:14, K. pointed out the radical nature of man's sin, especially in his endeavors for sanctification, and emphasized that God makes godless and not saints just.” Kohlbrügge successfully sought the evangelical cathedral preacher -Reformed Halle Cathedral and Castle Church Adolf Johannes Cleophas Zahn that he was the 2nd pastor of the Dutch Reformed (Kohlbrüggeschen) parish in Elberfeld from 1877 to 1880. After the death of Halle theology professor Wichelhaus , Kohlbrügge visited the city on the Saale at the invitation of the cathedral preacher Neuenhaus. On April 25, 1858, the pastor of the Dutch Reformed Elberfeld Free Congregation even gave a sermon in the cathedral church, which "... was an event of great importance for Kohlbrügge, because since 1834 he had not entered a pulpit in the regional church of Prussia" as his later pastor colleague Adolf Zahn noted.

In his sermons during the wars of 1866 and 1870/1871, Kohlbrügge presented Prussia as a protective power against unbelief. For decades, followers of Kohlbrügge's theology occupied the pastor's posts, especially in the Lower County of Bentheim.
