Wolfgang Gerhard Antes (born January 30, 1944 in Kaiserslautern ) is a former German politician ( CDU ). In 1986 he became  known far beyond Berlin as a figure in a major West Berlin corruption process - the Antes scandal .

Life

In 1964 Antes came to Berlin and joined the CDU. He began studying at the Free University of Berlin , graduating in 1968 with a degree in political science. From 1975 to 1979 he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . In May 1981 he became a building city councilor in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg , and in 1983 he was also chairman of the Charlottenburg CDU district association.

At the beginning of 1985 an anonymous pamphlet was circulating in the Charlottenburg CDU, which Antes put the words in the mouth:

“I was luckier when I was given the leaseholder of Cafe Europa. I got 50,000 marks from pimp tail for it . "

This accusation was also formulated in March 1985 in the affidavit of a lawyer, who, however, citing his legal professional confidentiality, did not mention the name of his informant. Antes then filed a criminal complaint on false allegations, claiming she did not know a man named Tail. In October 1985, a police investigation into another case found documents incriminating Antes. He was arrested on November 4, 1985. He lost his offices. In connection with the affair, three senators - Heinrich Lummer , Klaus Franke and Horst Vetter - resigned.

In April 1986 the trial of Antes and seven other defendants was opened in the Berlin district court . At first Antes was unusually optimistic, kept glancing into the auditorium and raised his hand as a sign of victory . In the further course of the process, various people from the real estate industry confessed to having bribed Antes with a total of at least 600,000 marks. It was also found that Antes had spent 760,000 marks on the expansion of his private Franconian mill and could not explain how he could afford this with the income of a city council.

Finally, Antes confessed to having received at least 300,000 marks from three contractors. Among them were 50,000 marks from the brothel operator and long-time CDU member Otto Schwanz , for which a straw man from Schwanz received a lucrative lease for the Café Europa in the Europa-Center . Antes used part of the money to pay the contributions of CDU card holders without their knowledge. With their votes, he had additional delegates and thus secured his position within the CDU.

On December 12, 1986, Antes was sentenced to a total of five years' imprisonment for bribery in four cases and acceptance of benefits . He did not have to face this sentence, as he was granted exemption from prison because of a severe kidney disease. He was also allowed to keep his mill, valued at 1.4 million marks, which was initially confiscated.

According to Antes' statement after his conviction, the funds received were intended for his personal party work and had nothing to do with unlawful official acts.
