Francesco Caratti (* around 1615 in Bissone , Switzerland ; † January 30, 1677 in Prague ) was an Italian - Swiss architect of the early Baroque in Bohemia .

Life

Caratti comes from the Swiss canton of Ticino and learned his trade in northern Italy , Vienna , Valtice and Prague. In 1652 he settled in Prague, where he was soon one of the most important architects alongside Carlo Lurago and Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini . His main works in Prague include the Lesser Town Church of St. Mary Magdalene, begun in 1656, and the Czernin Palace, which was built between 1669 and 1692. Outside Prague he built from 1653 to 1665 for the family Lobkowitz the Raudnitz Castle .

Giovanni Battista Maderna was one of his students.

On November 22nd, 1656 he married Veronica, daughter of the ennobled Viennese court sculptor Pietro Maino Maderno in Bissone on Lake Lugano . He had worked with Maderno from 1645 on behalf of Prince Karl Eusebius von Liechtenstein in Eisgrub , known as a master stonemason.
