The Church of St. Salvator ( Czech : Kostel Nejsvětějšího Salvátora ) is located in Prague's Old Town near Charles Bridge and across from its Old Town Bridge Tower . It is part of the former Jesuit college Clementinum , which was founded in 1556.

The church was begun in 1578, so the choir as the oldest part still shows features of the Gothic to the Renaissance , in 1601 the three-aisled basilica with three mannerist marble portals was built. The organ gallery was completed in 1625, followed by stuccoing of the church. From 1638 to 1653 the architects Carlo Lurago , Francesco Caratti and František M. Kaňka worked on the galleries, the dome and finally on the vestibule. The front side was shaped by stone sculptures by Johann Georg Bendl. Above all, Christ as Redeemer of the world.

After the Jesuit Order was dissolved , the buildings became part of Charles University . Famous people like the philosopher and mathematician Bernard Bolzano preached in the church .

In 1990 student pastoral care was resumed, and in 2004 the first academic parish in the Czech Republic was established under Tomáš Halík .

In 2011 the organ from 1780 was restored by the company Eule Orgelbau Bautzen .

This church is not to be confused with the Evangelical Salvator Church (1611–1614) north of the Old Town Square .
