Tomáš Halík (born June 1, 1948 in Prague ) is a Czech sociologist , religious philosopher and Roman Catholic priest .

Life

Halík had studied sociology, philosophy and psychology in Prague and Bangor (Wales) in the 1960s , but could not work as a lecturer for political reasons. In the 1970s he studied in underground theology and in 1978 in the GDR by Hugo Aufderbeck for ordained priests , "probably the first priest [...] who pontificate [by while [the ...] John Paul II. Consecrated]". In the 1980s he worked underground and was a close collaborator of Cardinal František Tomášek . Officially, he worked in various professions, most recently as a psychotherapist with drug addicts.

After the fall of the Wall , he completed postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He then completed his habilitation in Wroclaw for practical theology and in Prague for sociology.

From 1990 to 1993 he was general secretary of the Czech Bishops' Conference . Pope John Paul II appointed him Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Culture . He worked as an external advisor to the Czech President Václav Havel .

Halík is Professor of Sociology at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague , Rector of the University Church of St. Salvator and President of the Czech Christian Academy .

In 2001 he taught as visiting professor at Oxford University , and in 2003 at the University of Cambridge .

The award by the Pontifical Cultural Council (2017) took place for his testimony of faith, his participation in social life and his stance against racial discrimination. Halík is one of the best-known intellectuals in the Czech Republic and regularly comments on political and ethical issues.
