Christian von Steven ( Russian Христиан Христианович Стевен / Christian Christianovich Stewen , scientific. Transliteration Christian Christianovič Steven ; born 19 jul. / The 30th January  1781 greg. In Fredrikshamn / Finland ; † 18 jul. / The 30th April  1863 greg. In Simferopol ) was a Russian botanist and entomologist of Swedish origin. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Steven ".

Live and act

Steven graduated from the medical-surgical faculty of the Petersburg Academy in 1799 and then worked in a silkworm farm in the Caucasus , where he rose to the position of assistant to the inspector (1806). In 1812 he was instrumental in founding the Nikita Botanical Garden in Crimea , which he was director until 1824. He was temporarily Chancellor of Moscow University . In southern Russia he worked from 1826 to 1851 as head of a silkworm farm.

Dedication names

The plant genera Stevenia Adams ex Fisch. from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae), plus Stevenorchis Wankow & Kränzl. and Steveniella Schltr. from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) are named after him. Furthermore, the species epithet of Paeonia steveniana Kemularia-Nathadse (syn. Paeonia wittmanniana var. Nudicarpa Schipcz. , Paeonia daurica subsp. Wittmanniana (Hartwiss ex Lindl.) DY Hong ) is chosen after him.
