Alexander Davidowitsch von Nordmann (born May 24, 1803 Ruotsinsalmi near Kymi ; † June 25, 1866 in Turku / Åbo) was a Finnish zoologist , botanist and paleontologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Nordm. "

Live and act

In 1832, after studying in Åbo (now Turku) (with a doctorate in philosophy) and Berlin (with a doctorate in medicine), he became a teacher of natural history, zoology and botany at the Richelieu Lyceum in Odessa . In 1834 he became a conservator at the Odessa Botanical Garden . Alexander von Nordmann founded a college for horticulture and a department for silkworm breeding . He studied the flora and fauna of southern Russia and the Balkans and is the first to describe numerous species.

One year after the death of his wife Helena from cholera - the marriage had five children - he returned from Odessa to Finland in 1849 and became professor of natural history and later of zoology at the University of Helsinki (Helsingfors in Swedish). He was a member of 29 scientific societies (including the Leopoldina since 1855 ) and author of 58 publications.

Dedication names

The Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) has been named after him since 1842 , and he discovered it in 1835 in the Caucasus northeast of Borjomi in what is now Georgia . Also the plant genus Nordmannia Ledeb. ex north m. from the family of Borage Family (Boraginaceae) it is named in honor.

In 1863 Benedykt Dybowski named a fish Abramis nordmannii in his honor, which as a synonym for today Pickerel ( Vimba vimba ( Linnaeus is considered, 1758)). The Alosa Nordmanni species described by Grigore Antipa in 1904 is also a synonym for Alosa tanaica ( Grimm , 1901). Henri Milne Edwards honored him in 1840 in the copepod species Euryphorus nordmanni , in the sea ​​lice species Lepeophtheirus nordmanni and in 1841 in the Aplousobranchia species Aplidium nordmanni . Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim honored him in 1842 in the black-winged curlew ( Glareola nordmanni ). The green- tailed gloss star subspecies ( Lamprotornis chalybaeus nordmanni ( Hartert, E & Neumann , 1914)) was named after him. In 1840, Alexander von Keyserling and Johann Heinrich Blasius named Mus nordmanni a synonym for the house mouse ( Mus musculus Linnaeus , 1758) and Sminthus nordmanni a synonym for steppe birch mouse ( Sicista subtilis ( Pallas , 1773)). Tord Tamerlan Teodor Thorell remedied the cross spider species ( Araneus nordmanni ) for him in 1870 . Anders Johan Malmgren described the Phyllodocida species Glycinde nordmanni in 1866 , Heinrich Rathke in 1837 the Asellota species Jaera nordmanni , Sven Ludvig Lovén 1835 Onychopoda species Evadne nordmanni , Oskar Henrik Carlgren 1921 the Actiniidae species Epiactis nordmanni . and Knud Hensch Stephensen in 1931 the Gammaridea species Stenula nordmanni .

Memberships

In 1838 Nordmann was introduced by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville as member number 148 of the Société cuviérienne . In 1860 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
