José López Requena

José Venancio López Requena (*  1791 in Guatemala City , †  September 28, 1863 ibid) was a Guatemalan president .

José Venancio López was born in Guatemala City as the son of Cayetano López Campillo, Knight of the Order of Santiago, and the Francisca Requena. He studied law in Spain and graduated in 1812 with excellent results. Returned to Guatemala, he worked as a lawyer and served in various positions in colonial administration. Most recently he was in 1820 as a syndic member of the Guatemala City council.

After independence from Spain, López was a Conservative member of the National Assembly of the Central American Confederation , which he also repeatedly chaired as president.

On December 14, 1841, he was appointed President of Guatemala. The only major decision of his short reign was to borrow 4,000 pesos from the state to pay outstanding wages to Rafael Carrera's soldiers . In view of the increasing pressure from Carrera and the limited scope for decision-making that remained, López resigned after only five months on May 14, 1842.
