Wisques Benedictine Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Benedictine Abbey Wisques is since 1889 French monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Wisques ( Pas-de-Calais ). It should not be confused with the Benedictine Abbey of Wisques, which was founded at the same time .

history

The Benedictine Abbey of Solesmes under Abbess Cécile Bruyère founded the daughter monastery Abbaye Notre-Dame de Wisques to the west of Saint-Omer in 1889 , which was elevated to an abbey in 1894 . The nuns first lived in the Great Castle and from 1894 in the newly built monastery. The monks of the later Abbaye Saint-Paul de Wisques then moved their priory to the Great Castle. In 1901 the nuns avoided the anti-monastery Third Republic to Oosterhout near Breda in the Netherlands (near the Premonstratensian convent of Sint-Catharinadal), where the monks followed them in 1907.

When the nuns were able to return to Wisques in 1919, part of it remained in Oosterhout, which was elevated to a priory and an abbey in 1924 ( Onze-Lieve-Vrouweabdij under Abbess Hildegarde Lamy de la Chapelle, * 1874) and from 1944 from French to Dutch passed over.

In 1940 Wisques Monastery was in the middle of the war. About 10 sisters were able to stay in the time of the occupation, the others were divided between Saint-Omer, Solesmes, Lisieux and Kergonan . After the war, monastery life continued (inauguration of the church in 1964).

Mailings and foundations

In 1889 the monastery sent nuns to the Abbaye Saint-Nicolas de Verneuil-sur-Avre (1627-2001) in Verneuil-sur-Avre (west of Dreux ). In 1902 a part of the convent of Verneuil went into exile under Abbess Gertrude Hastey to Oosterhout and initially maintained their own monastic life there, but joined the convent of Wisques in 1905 (after the death of Abbess Gertrude).

In 1936 Wisques sent a group of four nuns under Matron Gertrude Adam (1872-1962) to help found the Abbaye Sainte-Marie des Deux-Montagnes in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac in the province of Quebec in Canada . The group stayed forever. In 1946 the monastery was raised to the abbey and founded in 1981 in Westfield (Vermont) in the United States , the monastery Monastery of the Immaculate Heart of Mary .
