Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac is a municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec . It is located in the Laurentides administrative region , around 30 km west of Montreal . Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Deux-Montagnes , has an area of 9.31 km² and has 15,689 inhabitants (2011).

Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac is located on the north bank of the Lac des Deux Montagnes , which belongs to the mouth of the Ottawa . Neighboring municipalities are Pointe-Calumet in the southwest, Saint-Joseph-du-Lac in the west, Saint-Eustache in the north, Deux-Montagnes in the east and the Montreal district of L'Île-Bizard – Sainte-Geneviève in the south (on the opposite side of the Lac des Deux Montagnes).
history
The place is named after Saint Martha of Bethany , the suffix "sur-le-Lac" refers to the location on the lake shore. The later urban area was largely uninhabited until the 1950s. The parish was founded in 1956, followed four years later by the establishment of the civil parish through an assignment of territory to the neighboring parish of Saint-Eustache . In 1973 the rapidly growing Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac received city status. Between 2001 and 2011 alone the number of inhabitants doubled.
In Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac there is a monastery of the Congrégation de Solesmes .

According to the 2011 census, Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac had 15,689 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 1,685.2 inh / km². 90.1% of the population stated French as their main language, the share of English was 5.1%. 0.8% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers made up 4.0%. Only French spoke 50.9%. In 2001, 93.4% of the population were Roman Catholic , 2.4% Protestant and 3.3% non-denominational.

The place is accessed through the main street 344. In addition, the Autoroute 640 runs north of the village towards Repentigny . Two bus routes connect Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac with the Deux-Montagnes train station , where there is a connection to the AMT local trains to Montreal.
