Pointe-Calumet is a municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Laurentides administrative region , around 30 km west of Montreal . Pointe-Calumet belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Deux-Montagnes , has an area of ​​4.63 km² and has 6,396 inhabitants (2011).

Pointe-Calumet is located on the north bank of Lac des Deux Montagnes , which is part of the Ottawa estuary . About 300 meters from the lakeshore there are two other small lakes, Lac de la Sablière and Lac des Sables. Neighboring municipalities are Oka in the west, Saint-Joseph-du-Lac in the north, Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac in the northeast and the Montreal district of L'Île-Bizard – Sainte-Geneviève in the southeast (on the opposite side of Lac des Deux Montagnes).

history

The place is named after an Indian gathering place where Iroquois tribes met to smoke the peace pipe ( French: calumet ). We have recorded a meeting between Abenaki and Iroquois in 1720, who concluded an agreement there. On a map of the Seigneurie Lac-des-Deux-Montagnes from 1798 a place called Pointe Calumet is noted. From 1916 onwards, due to the proximity to an attractive sandy beach, numerous holiday homes were built, which over time have been inhabited all year round. The municipality of Pointe-Calumet was founded in 1953 through an assignment of territory to the neighboring municipality of Saint-Joseph-du-Lac . Pointe-Calumet is a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association founded in 2000 .
