Josef Otto
Josef Otto (born September 28, 1880 in Dieburg ; † January 21, 1961 ) was a German heavy athlete. Between 1896 and 1926 he won around 300 honorary prizes as an all-round athlete in the disciplines of wrestling , chiselling , discus throwing , hammer throwing , shot put and stone pushing , including four world championships , 30 German and 58 other championships.
biography
Josef Otto was the son of Joseph Otto and Anna Maria Otto. He had a brother, Edmund Otto. With his wife Regina, geb. Windschmitt, he had 4 children, Edmund, Ferdinand, Berta Augusta and Maria Elisabeth.
In 1896 Josef Otto came to Darmstadt at the age of 16. There he learned the craft of carpenter . He then worked as a foreman in Georg Schleidts (1878–1942) carpentry until 1904 . At that time he was successful in heavy athletics and inspired Joseph Otto for weight training. In the Athleten-Verein-Darmstadt founded by Schleidt in 1894, his brother Edmund, Hermann Gross and Ludwig Eiberger , among others, were active.
Josef Otto then worked as a stage master at the Darmstadt State Theater from 1904 to 1918. In 1922 he took over the Zum Landsberg restaurant on Ballonplatz / corner of Alexanderstrasse and Magdalenenstrasse in Darmstadt. There he had a petrol pump set in front of the inn in 1926 in order to benefit from the emerging automobile traffic. The facility, which was enlarged several times, fell victim to the bombing in World War II. After the reconstruction, he continued to operate the petrol station until he handed it over to his son Edmund and grandson Josef Schlegel in 1956.
Athletic career and successes
At the turn of the century Josef Otto teamed up with the student Speitel from Pforzheim and practiced with the large iron ball (without lead filling) and with the heavy iron discus during lunch breaks on the parade ground in Darmstadt.
At an international sports festival in Frankfurt's Palmengarten, he took part in the discus competition for the first time - at that time, a 2.50 m "square ring" was thrown without twisting - and came third behind two Czechs .
Otto started first for the Athletik-Sport-Verein 1895 Darmstadt, later for the Darmstädter SC. He achieved his first championships in wrestling in 1898 and in 1899 in Duisburg and Munich in stone throwing and chiselling. In Strasbourg, after three victories in discus throwing, he was the first German to throw over 40 m (41.70), the very coveted challenge prize of the then imperial governor of Alsace-Lorraine, Karl von Wedel .
In 1906, after he had already completed his competitions, his supervisor reported him to throw hammer. He didn't know the device and wanted to try it out. Right away, he threw the German record with over 40 m.
In 1912 he was unable to take part in the German championships due to illness; his brother Edmund Otto became German weight throwing champion that year.
A world record in weight throwing set in 1913 in Breslau - 19.70, with a 25 pound weight - was not set until after 1960.
In 1926 he was once again German master in lifting at the German Heavy Athletics Championships in Frankfurt am Main.
