Remigius Adrianus Haanen

Remigius Adrianus Haanen (born January 5, 1812 in Oosterhout , † August 13, 1894 in Aussee ) was a Dutch landscape painter and etcher who worked in the k. and k. Austria-Hungary monarchy took his permanent residence.

Life

Remigius Adrianus Haanen was a son of the art dealer , restorer and genre painter Casparis Haanen (1778–1849) and Isabella Johanna Sangster (1777–1846). He was one of six children and the youngest child in the family. His siblings, who also went down in art history, were the flower and still life painter Adriana Johanna Haanen , the landscape painter George Gillis Haanen and the landscape painter Elisabeth Alida Haanen .

He was a student of his father and from 1832 by Jan van Ravenzwaay (1789-1869) in Hilversum . He made a long study trip through Europe and visited, among others, Frankfurt am Main , Northern Italy and St. Petersburg . In Vienna he became a student of Peter Johann Geiger at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. On March 26, 1842, he married Emilie Mayer von Alsó-Rußbach in Vienna . The painter Cecilus van Haanen (1844–1914) also came from this marriage . In 1846, King Wilhelm II of the Netherlands awarded the Order of the Oak Crown . Haanen exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1855 , among other things . He was a member of the Antiquities Association in Vienna . From 1865 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . After long stays in London in 1866 and 1867, the British Museum bought a collection of his etchings. Prince Esterházy commissioned him to organize and catalog his gallery in Budapest . From 1875 until his death in 1894 he lived in Vienna's "Schellinggasse 1". He died on August 13, 1894 while taking a cure in the health resort of Aussee.

He signed his works with "RH", "R. v. Haanen "and" R. van Haanen ”.

A bust of Remigius Adrianus Haanens by Viktor Tilgner was unveiled in Vienna on May 15, 1901. The monument perished during the Second World War. Some of his works belonged to the looted art of the NSDAP . A monograph on him and his work or a complete list of his works is not yet available.
