Spui (Amsterdam)

The Spui

Spui is a square in downtown Amsterdam . The name comes from the river Spui , which formed the southern border of Amsterdam until 1425. When the medieval city moat, the Singel , was dug, the river received another lock, called Boerenverdriet ("Bauernverdruss") by the locals. In 1882, the Spui was changed to its present-day location by embankments. It has been a pedestrian zone since 1996.

There are many bookshops on the Spui and a book market every Friday. There is an art market every Sunday. The Dutch publisher Athenaeum Boekhandel has its headquarters there. The Hofje Begijnhof is entered from the Spui, where the Oude Lutherse Kerk ("Old Lutheran Church") from 1630 and the Maagdenhuis from 1784 are located. The statue of Lieverdje (" Bearer of Hope") by Carel Kneulman stands on the square .
