The Amsterdam canal belt and the position of the Singel

The Singel (cf. German " Zingel ") is a medieval fortress moat in Amsterdam that bounded the city in the west until the end of the 16th century and runs from the IJ to the Muntplein , where it flows into the Amstel . Together with the Kloveniersburgwal, it is the innermost and oldest canal of the Amsterdam canal belt and encloses the core of old Amsterdam, today's inner city.

history

Until the 15th century, the Singel represented the Amsterdam city limits; during this time it was called Stedegracht . In the 17th century it was temporarily called Koningsgracht (Königsgracht); however, the new name could not establish itself. The Torensluis Bridge over the Singel is a typical arch bridge and Amsterdam's oldest surviving bridge. It dates from 1648.

The economic upswing of the Golden Age of the Netherlands and the expansion of the urban area of Amsterdam made it necessary to build further canals around the former Singel and Kloveniersburgwal canals. Together with the three new main canals, the Heren- , Keizers- and Prinsengracht form the canal belt, which is now no longer just the defense, but mainly the transport of goods, the drainage and the sewer served.
