The Oude Lutherse Kerk ( German  Old Lutheran Church ) is a Lutheran church on the street Singel , at the corner of Spui , in Amsterdam . It stands on the place where the Lutheran house church used to stand. The church was built in 1632/33 under the direction of Wessel Becker and Willem van Daelens .

history

As early as 1600 , worship gatherings took place at this location in a warehouse , the De Vergulden Pot . With the purchase of neighboring buildings, the area of the church was continuously enlarged. In 1631 the city of Amsterdam approved the plan to build a new church in place of the seven buildings. In 1633 the church was taken into use. The church has an irregular floor plan. The interior is rectangular, surrounded by galleries that rest on Ionic and Tuscan columns . Doric columns support the roof structure. The pulpit dates from 1640.

The church has been called the Old Lutheran Church since the New Lutheran Church was built in 1671.

use

In addition to worship, the church also served social purposes. In 1790, the Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen (German: Society for the benefit of the general public ) held its first public meeting here. Due to the decline in church attendance, the parish leadership has rented the church and its outbuildings to the Universiteit van Amsterdam . The university has power of disposal over various rooms on working days and uses the church as an auditorium, among other things . In the church there is an organ that was built by Johan Frederik Witte from Bätz & Co. in 1886.

restoration

Due to the subsidence of the foundation , a thorough restoration was carried out in 1925 . The architect Abel Antoon Kok had the tombstones removed and the graves cleared. The originally lead-glazed windows had already been replaced in 1774. During the last restoration between 1984 and 1986, most of the interior was restored in its old fashion. The Tetterode library, founded by the architect KPC de Bazel, is now located in an extension.
