Balthasar Lydius

Balthasar Lydius (also Palatinus ; born August 13, 1576 in Umstadt ; † January 20, 1629 in Dordrecht ) was a German Reformed clergyman , theologian and church historian .

Life

Lydius was the son of the theologian Martin Lydius . From this he received his first lessons. He then attended the universities of Franeker from 1596 and Leiden from 1599 to study theology. From 1602 he was first preacher of the Reformed congregation, which lived secretly in Herzogenbusch . On October 9, 1602, he was appointed as a preacher in Dordrecht, but only got a job as a preacher there in 1604. He remained in this position until his death. His writing activity also developed in Dordrecht.

Lydius, who had already participated in the Synod in 1607, opened and closed the Synod in Dordrecht, which lasted from November 1618 to May 1619 with his sermons. The synod discussed the first Dutch translation of the Bible. In the course of this synod, the brief compilation of their negotiations and the writing of the catechetical textbook Het cort, the christelycke empty , as well as a refutation by Petrus Cunaeus . He was also a participant in the synods in July / August 1619 and August 1620.

The preacher Jacobus Lydius was his son.
