Martin Lydius

Martin Lydius or Martinus Lydius (* 1539 or 1540 in Lübeck ; † June 27, 1601 in Franeker ) was a German Reformed theologian and university professor .

Life

Martin Lydius was the son of Johann Lydius. The family moved from Lübeck to Ilfeld because of their faith. There Lydius received his first lessons at the Ilfeld convent school under Michael Neander . In 1564 he came to study theology at the University of Tübingen . From there he moved to Heidelberg University in 1567 . There he became head of the Collegium Philosophicum alongside Zacharias Ursinus . As Elector Ludwig VI. After transforming Heidelberg University into a Lutheran university from the Palatinate , Lydius went to Umstadt and from there to Frankfurt am Main and Antwerp .

Lydius received for 21 April 1579 a reputation as the third preacher to Amsterdam. However, he did not go to Amsterdam until May 1580. 1581 he attended the National Synod in Middelburg , from 13 to 27 March 1582, he led the great North and South Holland Synod in Haarlem and in 1583 the North Holland Synod in Amsterdam. Wilhelm Ludwig von Nassau later made him head of the Frisian Provincial Synod in 1589 and 1596. He was called to Bolsward in 1586 and to Leeuwarden in 1589 to settle church disputes . In 1594 he drafted a new church constitution for Groningen with Menso Alting and Sibrand Lubbert .

Lydius was appointed professor of theology from the University of Leiden in 1585 . However, he turned down this and took up a theology professorship at the University of Franeker on July 29, 1585 . In 1586 and 1598 he was rector of the university. In addition, he rose to professor primarius of theology.

The preacher Balthasar Lydius was his son, the preacher Jacobus Lydius his grandson.
