Sibrandus Lubbertus

Sibrand Lubbert (also: Sibet Lubben, Sibrand Lubbertus * to 1555 / 56 in Langwarden ; † 10 / 11 / 21st January 1625 in Franeker ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Life

Lubbert, who came from a family of Frisian chiefs , graduated from school in Bremen and matriculated at the University of Wittenberg in 1575 . He probably continued his studies at the University of Geneva in 1576 . In 1577 you can find him at the University of Basel , 1578 at the University of Marburg and he studied in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , where the University of Heidelberg had been relocated due to religious disputes.

In 1581 the Calvinist was courted by the communities in Emden and Brussels . He went to Emden. In 1583 he was dismissed under pressure from the Lutheran Count Edzard and his court preacher Johannes Ligarius . In 1585 he was met in Groningen , where he took part in the city's church-regulating measures. In 1585 he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Franeker , he received his doctorate in theology at the University of Heidelberg in 1587 and subsequently fought against the forces of the Counter-Reformation . In the religious struggles of that time he appeared against the socians , was a member of the Synod in Dordrecht in 1618/19 and advocated freedom of choice for the church. He died as rector of the Academy in Franeker.

He was married to Gertrude van Oosterzee , with whom he had a daughter Magdalena.
