Jacobus Lydius

Jacobus Lydius (also Jacob Lydius ; * around 1610 in Dordrecht ; † 1679 ibid) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and clergyman .

Life

Lydius was the son of the Dordrecht preacher Balthasar Lydius and grandson of the theologian Martin Lydius . He attended the Dordrecht Latin School under Antonius Aemilius and Gerard Bor . He then went to study theology at the University of Leiden , where he was trained under Andreas Rivet , Antonius Walaeus , Antonius Thysius and Franco Petri Burgersdyck , among others . In 1632 he was given the position of preacher from Bleskensgraaf .

Lydius was given a preaching position in his hometown of Dordrecht in 1637, and in 1643, through Jacob Cats' mediation, he was allowed to accompany the extraordinary Dutch embassy, ​​which was supposed to mediate between King Charles and Parliament in England . He was able to use this trip to visit several English universities, to use their library and to meet well-known theologians of England through the mediation of Johann Gerhard Vossius . Accordingly, this journey was fruitful for his work. He made a name for himself in Dordrecht as a preacher, theologian and poet and died in office in 1679.
