Cornelis van Vollenhoven

Cornelis van Vollenhoven (born May 8, 1874 in Dordrecht , † April 28, 1933 in Leiden ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Cornelis was the son of the lawyer Willem Jan van Vollenhoven (* December 16, 1822 in Rotterdam; † March 15, 1886 in Dordrecht) and his wife Maria Elisabeth Rijshouwer (* December 21, 1829 in Rotterdam; † April 2, 1878 in Dordrecht) . He attended the Johann de Witt Gymnasium in Dordrecht and began studying law at the University of Leiden on September 22, 1891 , where he also attended lectures in the oriental languages. On May 3, 1898, Vollenhoven received his doctorate in law with the thesis Omtrek en inhoud van het internationale rechts . After working for a few years as secretary to Jacob Theodoor Cremer in the Dutch Colonial Ministry, on June 21, 1901, he became professor for Muslim law, its institutions, their use in the Dutch East Indies and the constitutional law of the Dutch colonies, as well as their possessions in Surinam and Curaçao in Call to suffering.

He began this task on October 20, 1901 with the introductory speech Exacte Rechtsswetenschap and his teaching assignment was extended to the Indonesian law books on June 23, 1902. In the academy year 1916/17 he was rector of the Alma Mater , in 1911 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , of which he was chairman from 1929 to 1932. He was also chairman of the Indian Genootschap in 1930 , was knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1932 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam . Vollenhoven is best known for his work on the unwritten laws of Adat . In 1978 an institute was named after him at the Leiden University that deals with the laws of developing countries.
