The G7 summit in La Malbaie was the 44th summit of the leaders of the Group of Seven . The meeting took place under the chairmanship of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on June 8 and 9, 2018, at the hotel resort Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in the city of La Malbaie ( Charlevoix-Est regional municipality ) in Quebec .
After Russia was excluded from the G8 in March 2014 and after the conflict-ridden meeting of finance ministers without a joint final declaration in the run-up to the G7 summit, the G7 were also referred to as the G6 + 1. Trump's economic advisor Larry Kudlow claimed before the meeting that the world trading system was a mess (original: "a mess").
subjects
- Donald Trump's foreclosure policy with punitive tariffs or trade balance equalization against the trade surplus of individual states in world trade with growth for all?
- Calling on North Korea to "completely, verifiably and irreversibly" eliminate its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs
- Summit participants shared determination that the Iranian nuclear program remains peaceful, in accordance with international commitments and pledges never to seek, develop or procure nuclear weapons, and to end Iran's financing of terrorist groups .
- More women in management positions ? ( Gender equality )
- More plastic waste also in the oceans or clean oceans with marine conservation and recycling? (second day of the summit). However, the US and Japan agreed not to ensure that plastic is fully recyclable by 2030.
Others
Shortly before the summit, Trump had proposed that Russia be included in the group again (G8 instead of G7). Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte followed suit .
Trump left earlier than the other participants; he flew directly from Canada to Singapore for a summit meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un . Before that he spoke of an “enormously successful summit meeting” and gave his relationship with Merkel, Macron and the host Trudeau the top grade “ten”.
Trudeau described the joint final declaration of the seven participants as "ambitious" and added that Trump would "of course continue to say what he says". Macron described the Americans' late consent to sign the traditional plea against protectionism as a possible turnaround. After his approval of the G-7 final declaration, Trump will hardly be able to continue to raise protective tariffs and alienate allies. The Europeans have proven in Canada that it is worth taking a strong stand against Trump.
A few hours later, Trump withdrew his approval of the G7 final declaration via Twitter. He cited Trudeau's press conference as the reason. Trudeau had said, among other things: "We Canadians are nice, we are sensible, but we don't allow ourselves to be pushed around." Trudeau had affirmed that the Americans in particular would suffer from Trump's "illegal and unjustified" tariffs on steel and aluminum. Canada's retaliatory tariffs would go into effect July 1, as planned.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sharply criticized the G7 group and suggested an early bilateral meeting with US President Trump.
G7- "photo duel"
A picture published by the Federal Press Office on June 9, 2018 caused a sensation in politics and quickly spread on social media . It became the symbol of the summit. The photo shows Chancellor Angela Merkel standing at a table, on the top of which she leans with both hands. She is surrounded by the other heads of state and government who are also standing. In front of Merkel, Donald Trump sits with crossed arms and hunched shoulders, he looks past Merkel. The official photo is from Jesco Denzel . He put it on the sidelines of the official agenda on the second day of the summit. The photo was tweeted by government spokesman Steffen Seibert .
Sarah Huckabee Sanders , White House press secretary , tweeted a photo of the same scene from a different perspective . Trump then appears as sitting in the center of the action.
