To promote the Arab Spring were at the summit Egypt and Tunisia grants promised by 2013 in the amount of 20 billion dollars to support the reforms in these countries. The International Monetary Fund had previously warned of a financial emergency in the Arab states and stated a financial need of 160 billion for the next three years. The G8 states announced that they wanted to secure the democratic reforms by strengthening the economy and emphasized the importance of tourism, which had declined as a result of the Arab Spring. EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso stated that the affected region was "of the utmost strategic importance" for Europe and that the reforms would therefore continue to be supported. In addition, bilateral aid was announced.
In connection with the ongoing international military operation in Libya , the G8 heads of state and government demanded the resignation of the Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi , since the military operation could not be ended beforehand. The Russian President Medvedev said that Gaddafi would do by resigning his country "a favor". At the same time he announced that Russia would not give the Libyan dictator an exile.
In the final declaration of the summit, the G8 states condemned the violence in the Syrian civil war and called on the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to carry out reforms.
Another important topic of the meeting was - in view of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima - the future handling of nuclear power .
