G8 summit in Sochi 2014

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 40th meeting of the Group of Eight , the seven most important industrial nations plus Russia, was planned for June 4-5, 2014 in Sochi , but was canceled by the western members because of the ongoing international conflict at the time due to the Crimean crisis .

There has been a G8 summit in Russia since 1998 (the year Russia was accepted as the eighth member), namely in Saint Petersburg in 2006 . Usually the head of the host country, in 2014 Vladimir Putin as Russian President, chairs the meeting.

Amid the international tension over the Crimean crisis , US President Barack Obama telephoned Putin on March 1, 2014, that the US would withdraw from all G8 meetings; the following day the British and French governments announced something similar. On March 1, the US government condemned “Russia's military intervention on Ukrainian territory” as “a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity”. US Secretary of State Kerry announced on March 2, 2014 that there would be no G8 summit if the events in Crimea continued.

At a meeting of the G7 on the sidelines of the summit on nuclear safety on March 24, 2014 in The Hague , the representatives of the seven strongest industrialized nations announced that the G8 summit would not take place. In the future, they want to exchange and advise on important issues without Russian participation. The representatives of the G7 drew far-reaching consequences from Russia's actions in the Crimean crisis and alternatively met on the same date in Brussels .
