action

season 1

After three years as an assistant, Jane Sloan has been promoted to editor at Scarlet women's magazine . Her best friends Kat Edison and Sutton Brady work for the same magazine. Kat heads the social media department , Sutton is an editor's assistant.

Their job often presents the three protagonists with unexpected problems. Jane is sued by a stripper for defamation based on an article , Kat is vilified online, and Sutton is frustrated because she has long dreamed of working in the fashion section.

In her private life, Kat finds out that she is a lesbian and meets the artist Adena. Sutton has an affair with board member Richard. Jane falls in love with Ryan, the editor of a men's magazine.

At the end of the season, the three main characters part ways. Jane changes magazines, Kat goes abroad with her friend, and Sutton stays with Scarlet but becomes an assistant to another employee.

season 2

After a gross mistake with an interviewee, Jane is released and wants to return to Scarlet . The editor-in-chief Jacqueline does not want this for the time being, because Jane should learn to deal with a failure. Meanwhile, Kat is happy in her relationship with Adena, with whom she also occasionally works professionally, while Sutton has some difficulties as Oliver's new assistant due to rumors in the company and unexpected problems.

The three protagonists are also confronted with problems in their private lives. Jane finds out that she will soon be unable to have children due to a mutation, and she meets Ryan again, to whom she is still drawn, although she has a new relationship. Kat is still unsure of her sexuality, which is straining her relationship with her friend Adena, and Sutton sees her alcoholic mother again after many years.

At the end of the season, Jane and Ryan reconcile, while Kat and Adena's relationship falls apart, Sutton finds Richard again and has apparently finally found her place in the company.

season 3

Jane's relationship with Ryan shakes because she doesn't want him to freeze her eggs and he has sex with another woman. Kat is heartbroken after breaking up with Adena and resolves not to shut herself off from her future partners. Meanwhile, Sutton and Richard have a relationship that is not always harmonious.

Jane and Jacqueline do a research to find out that several women were mentally abused by a well-known fashion photographer. The exposure of the scandal not only benefits them and the magazine. Meanwhile, Kat is running for councilor and falls in love with her assistant Tia, while Sutton is again unsure whether she would rather work in the foreground or background of the fashion department.

In the last episode of the season, Jane and Ryan make it up for good, while Kat revives her relationship with Adena and Sutton wants to marry Richard. However, the professional future of the three is uncertain when one day they find the editorial rooms empty.

characters

Jane Sloan

Jane grew up with three brothers in Colorado . Her mother died of breast cancer , which is why it is very difficult for her to write about the disease in one episode. In the same episode, a visit to the doctor reveals that she has an increased risk of developing the disease due to a mutation in the BRCA1 gene. In one episode of the second season, she argues with Sutton because they find a gun in their shared apartment. She explains that she is extremely hostile to the guns policy in the country because the daughter of her then kindergarten teacher was killed in the rampage in Columbine and Jane threw away her light shoes because she was afraid of being discovered by a gunman.

Jane begins a relationship with Ryan Decker (known as the Pinstripe Guy ), a columnist for the men's magazine Pinstripe , with whom she also experiences her first orgasm . After a few months, however, the two separate again, as she realizes that he prefers open relationships to normal relationships. She is recruited by the political magazine Incite because of her article about a congressman . At the end of the season, she accepts the offer and leaves Scarlet.

In the second season, Jane writes an article that is heavily criticized by her interviewee. When she tries to apologize to this via voice message, the recording accidentally ends up on the Internet. Because of this incident, Jane is fired and temporarily works as a freelance journalist. During this time she met Ben Chau, a gynecologist . The two arrange to meet, but Jane does not approve of Ben's religiosity and an argument arises with him because she is angry with religions due to the early death of her mother. However, the two reconcile shortly afterwards. Before that, she meets Ryan, who now works for a tabloid and invites her to a party, but Jane quickly realizes that he still prefers open relationships.

During another visit to the doctor, she learns that her fertility is severely restricted due to the BRCA1 mutation. That's why she opts for social freezing . This threatens to fail as your health insurance does not cover the treatment. Ben suggests that she pretend to be his partner, as the treatment is free for women who live in families. When Jane tells Pinstripe about her plan in the last episode of the second season, he offers her his financial support and admits that he still has feelings for her and kisses her.

Kat Edison

Kat comes from a well-to-do family as her parents are well-paid psychologists . She helped bring the magazine's official Twitter account to 2 million followers. When she published an article about gender inequality, she was bullied on the Internet : first a troll insulted her with vulgar expressions, then he posted a nude photo of her on the Internet.

Kat meets Adena El-Amin, a photographer from Iran , and the two spend a lot of time together. Although Kat first insured themselves heterosexual to be, she noticed gradually her feelings for the artist. When Adena returns to the United States from a short stay in Paris and is stuck at the airport because of her origins , Kat comes to her. She uses her parents' money to buy a ticket to be with Adena, and the two of them have sex in a first class lounge . At the end of the season, Kat decides to follow Adena for a short vacation to South America .

In the second season Kat returns from South America, she now lives with Adena in a relationship that is initially allowed to stay in New York because her visa has been extended. Although the connection is initially happy, Kat is disappointed because her friend does not want to tell her how many people she has slept with, and Kat has sex with a friend of Adena's in a dream . Since Kat is still unsure about her sexuality, Adena suggests that they have an open relationship. The relationship seems to become more stable again when Kat Adena confesses her love and they fly to Paris for a few days with Jane and Sutton. There Kat learns that Adena has not continued her artistic activity since they were together, which is why they quarrel and Adena does not appear at a party in the last episode of the season that she wanted to go to with Kat.

Sutton Brady

Unlike Jane and Kat, Sutton is still an assistant. She works for Lauren Park, who is a senior executive. She will move to the fashion department of the magazine as the season progresses, though she would get a much higher pay for the position in the marketing department. Your new manager will be Oliver Grayson, a fashion designer from Oklahoma .

Sutton has a secret relationship with Richard Hunter, who works as a corporate attorney for the magazine. Sutton eventually breaks up with Richard and then goes on to hang out with Alex Crawford, a former Wall Street Journal editor, but that connection breaks down when Alex realizes that Sutton still has feelings for Richard.

At the beginning of the second season, Sutton can have a relationship with Richard again due to a new regulation of the company, but this is strained because rumors circulate that Sutton slept up and therefore kept the job in the fashion department, which is why the connection does not last long. When Sutton got stuck with her work for Oliver Grayson, she befriends Brooke Langley, an influencer , who Sutton takes advantage of and uses her company credit card to buy cocaine worth $ 500. She also begins a relationship with another man, but is outraged when it turns out that she is his affair and apologizes to his wife.

When Jane finds a shotgun in the apartment where she lives with Sutton, she is angry and demands that Sutton get rid of it. To appease Jane, Sutton takes her to the shooting, which confirms Jane's negative opinion about guns. Jane eventually finds out that Sutton's visits to the shooting range originated in her youth, growing up with an alcoholic mother. Sutton finally melts her gun into earrings .

Since Sutton is helping Oliver get a bag for a photo shoot , he invites her to a party in Paris. Since Sutton needs a passport for this, but can not apply for it without a birth certificate , she drives Jane and Kat to her mother Babs so that she can give her the document. Babs tells her daughter that she now has a job and is a different person, which her Sutton does not believe at first, when she learns that Babs is dry , she decides to contact her regularly. At the end of the season, Sutton is in Paris with Jane, Kat, Adena and Oliver when she meets Richard, who he tells her he loves her.

Jacqueline Carlyle

Jacqueline Carlyle is the newspaper's editor-in-chief. She is often on hand to give good advice to her employees, especially Jane. She demands good performance from her employees, is always helpful to them, so she paid Kat's bail when she had to briefly go to jail for a physical abuse.

Jacqueline is married to Ian Carlyle and has two sons, James and Connor. At the end of the first season it is revealed that she was the victim of a serial rapist .

In the second season, Jacqueline hires Jane again when she is fired from Incite , but treats her very strictly. She also allows Kat, who, at the insistence of Cleo, a new board member, to produce an advertisement for a skin care product, during which she exposes the extremely conservative views of the company's CEO , to only advertise companies that inspire her personally. At the end of the season, Richard finds a list with the names of a possible replacement for Jacqueline.

Adena El-Amin

Adena describes herself as a proud, lesbian Muslim woman . She visits New York because it is the first time her paintings are exhibited in a gallery. At first she doesn't want it to be featured in Scarlet because she doesn't see it as a feminist magazine, but she changes her mind after Kat persuades her. Actually, she already has a relationship with a French woman named Coco, but after she can no longer save this crumbling connection, she chooses Kat.

In the second season, Adena is Kat's boyfriend. Although Adena does not want to talk to Kat about previous connections and Kat exchanges caresses with a friend of hers, the two stay together. When they have a disagreement at the end of the season over Adena hasn't produced any photographs since their relationship began, a breakup is hinted at as Adena doesn't go to Oliver Grayson's party with Kat.

The hackers made several Scarlet emails available to the public; according to an email from Jacqueline in 2014, an unspecified person almost died. Jane, Kat and Sutton reminisce about their first year at the magazine: Jane, then an intern, was assigned to Lauren as assistant, Kat was already in the social media department and had several more or less good ideas, but those from Jacqueline all were rejected. Sutton's position was limited in time, which is why she was always threatened with unemployment. In the present, Sutton reconciles with Richard and talks to him about the day they first met, Kat confronts Tia, who confirms that she also feels something for her.

Since Sutton now lives with Richard, Jane starts looking for a new roommate. One of the possible candidates is Alex, but Ryan is apparently not very enthusiastic about her idea. In the meantime, Sutton wants to organize a birthday party for Richard, and there is tension between the two when he tells her that he does not want to celebrate his special day. Meanwhile, Kat and Tia are campaigning when they become victims of racial profiling . Both have very different methods of processing this experience. At the end of the episode, Jane and Jacqueline track down a photographer who used to work for Pamela.

Jacqueline and Jane ask a former Pamela model for an interview. This agrees on the condition that other models can also have their say. An article is written about the women, Adena photographs them. Kat meets her and realizes that she still feels something for her. This suspicion is confirmed by Adena herself, who confides in Jane that she regrets separating from Kat. Meanwhile, Pamela learns about the planned article and threatens to file a lawsuit against the models, which is why the magazine asks her to comment. Meanwhile, in Sutton's seminar, participants are tasked with designing clothes for a fashion show, which could be a career springboard. Sutton struggles with her financial dependence on Richard while Kat meets with Adena to discuss their breakup.

Adena admits to Kat that their breakup was a mistake, which amazes Kat. Jacqueline later reveals to her that she will have to quit her job at Scarlet if she becomes a councilor, which she is dismayed to see. She tells Adena that she doesn't want to leave Scarlet and is comforted by her. At the election party that followed, the result was announced: Kat did not make it to the city council. At the election party, Ryan surprises Jane and admits that he kissed another woman during their short break from relationship, to which Jane reacts very angry. The next day, Jane and Jacqueline confront Pamela with the allegations, which everything denies. They later find out that Pamela gave an interview to another magazine to question Scarlet's credibility . Because of this, they publish their own article in the online edition before the competitor. In the meantime, Oliver asks Sutton to take care of Carlie because she is sick. Actually, Carlie is not sick at all, as she confesses to Sutton, but did not want to go to school because it is photo day and she is ashamed of her appearance. Sutton feels inspired by Carlie and decides to hire "real women" instead of models for her photo shoots in the future. Richard is offered a position in San Francisco , which he declines to stay with Sutton.

Kat vacillates between Adena and Tia. She finally has sex with Adena, who tells her that she has never stopped loving Kat. At work, Kat decides to cover the issues she would have addressed as a councilor in her articles. She finally breaks the connection with Tia and meets with Adena, who announces that Scarlet has given her a full-time position as a photographer. Meanwhile, Ryan tries to appease Jane, who is still angry with him but eventually forgives him when she realizes how strong her love for him is. Sutton's appearance at the fashion show is successful, which is why she receives a design contract for a dress. But when she designs and directs a photo shoot at the same time, she realizes that working behind the scenes is more important to her than designing. She then tells Richard that he can take the job in San Francisco if he wants. Meanwhile, Jane notes that some Scarlet models are only 14 years old, which is why Jacqueline hired the editors to create an issue that had a better message for younger readers. The next day, Jane, Kat and Sutton find the office empty, Jacqueline is nowhere to be seen.

“First of all : The new Freeform series The Bold Type is not particularly realistic (...) Nevertheless, this new format, conceived by Sarah Watson, creates something that few others succeed: It looks dazzling at the same time, entertains and transports several political messages. Your story from the opening episode is the one that you would most likely expect in a series from Freeform. But here, too, well-known role models are broken up. After just a few sex dates, which of course all have to be kept secret, Sutton is no longer in the mood for secrecy (...) The trio in overpopulated New York has long since found an outlet for the frustration at recent failures: it just screams when people drive by Subway cars. Sometimes you want to scream as a viewer yourself when you see how unrealistic the external features of this series are constructed. At its core, however, it tells a true, understandable story - that of three young women trying to reconcile careers, interests and love with one another. There is really nothing wrong with that. "

Elena Witzeck wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the conflict, the challenge for the protagonists and the inner tension of the plot are not clear. The fact that other topics than the “annoying, mundane requirements of the glossy magazine” seem more urgent to the three main characters is only mentioned in passing. The show doesn't want to appeal to viewers who wistfully remember Sex and the City movie nights, but to those just old enough to have heard of Carrie Bradshaw. The image of women in the production is made up of "three protagonists with freshly blown hair" who miss each other after just a few hours and who have practice in removing their underwear at work. There is only room for a handful of character traits: fearful and self-critical, stormy and self-confident. The main actresses are moved from scene to scene like “cardboard figures”, the audience does not get to see much of the complexity of the main characters, Carrie Bradshaw is more complex in comparison. It would have been brave to give the female main characters a less remarkable appearance and more character, as well as to forego scenes in which they sit giggling and drinking champagne on the office floor, as this is unrealistic. The memory of the Good Girls Revolt series , which is about the true story of women who sought recognition as full-fledged editors in the 1970s, has not yet faded. In contrast, there will be more seasons of The Bold Type because nobody seems to want to see too much reality.

Matt Zoller Seitz of New York thought the series was the best television surprise of the summer of 2017. She is equally interested in portraying a journalism drama and female friendship in the style of a Sex and the City- like romantic comedy, which she manages very well and achieves more than one might think. The situations the three main female characters get into might seem well-known and trite in other series, but The Bold Type surprises viewers with a fresh perspective on the characters' problems. In addition, despite its "glamor and luxury", which is rarely seen on television, the production knows how journalism will be done in 2017. The production is also conscientious in telling a story of women, which can be seen, among other things, from the focus on subtle gestures that women immediately notice, without depicting the male figures as caricatures. Kat would initially get the most captivating storylines about her sexuality and the effects of online trolls, while Jane and Sutton would not be as dynamic but just as convincingly delved into their search for their places in the editorial office. The best figure, however, is Jacqueline because, unlike similar figures, she is neither a “pampered sect leader” nor a “hateful witch”, but a quiet, charismatic person who draws her strength from a “mixture of polite directness and tactical silence “Scoop. In contrast to other mentor figures on television, their advice is also really helpful. Not many “shamelessly entertaining” series are as smart as The Bold Type .

Laura Bradley wrote in Vanity Fair that the drama is often contrived in the plot, the understanding of a magazine editorial even for a television series is uninformed and the tone is "caries-causing sweetness" for even the most patient viewer. However, it is difficult to watch an episode without feeling drawn to the charming ensemble in a strange and terrifying way. The three main actresses are attractive, serious and about the same age as their characters, which gives them additional credibility. While The Bold Type will likely never be as bold as Girls , don't even try. The series is Freeform's idea of boldness, in a fun, ambitious, “ Pinterest- friendly” way. This is not only okay, but also necessary, since in these times an opportunity to relax with a glass of rosé wine and immerse yourself in a world in which social advancement, true love and dream fulfillment are possible are welcome. In addition, the series is appealing for New York citizens, as the city is full of nice people and the subway is not a "bastard". Although Jacqueline would initially be presented as a Miranda Priestley guy, she quickly turns into a helpful, friendly mentor. The affair between Sutton and Richard is not disgusting and cheesy, but a really empathetic and heartwarming relationship, even if it would probably not play out in reality. The only weak moments are when the series dares to tackle heavier topics like cyber-bullying and misogyny . The show is best when it focuses on the characters' relentlessly supportive interpersonal relationships.
