action

Overprotective control freak James is about to send his beloved daughter Melanie to college. There are actually over 4,000 colleges in the USA, but he wants five important criteria to be met in a good college, namely the quality of the academic facilities, the distance from home, the campus security, the distance from home and finally the distance from home, All that remains is Northwestern University , just 40 miles from home in Fox Springs. Melanie is just not very enthusiastic about it, she prefers to study law at Georgetown University . That, in turn, upsets James, who does not want his daughter to study in Washington, DC , 700 miles away . Fearing that something bad could happen to her, he quickly suggests a father-daughter trip, a so-called college road trip.

The first stop is the Northwestern, where James tries all sorts of tricks to convince his daughter that she should study there. But she sees through this quickly and with the help of a little white lie, she manages to quickly move on. At least until the next traffic jam, which James wants to avoid with his expensive navigation system. Unfortunately, he ends up in the wilderness and gets a flat tire. When trying to change this, his car overturns and falls down a slope, so that you have to continue on foot. With the inn "Deer Creek" you will quickly find a place to stay for the night. The next day, they first hitchhike and then take the bus to see grandmother. During the trip Melanie explains to her father that she absolutely wants to go to Georgetown so that she can also go to Japan for a year. After he is upset, he accepts her apology for hiding it from him and that his daughter has a will of her own too.

While visiting her grandmother in Pittsburgh, Melanie stayed with her two best friends in the dormitory . He himself fears bad things, which is why he tries to break into the home. When he snuck in and hid under the bed, however, he had to overhear that his daughter is proud of him because he finally accepts her will and no longer spies on her. James realizes what he's doing himself and falls asleep. When he wakes up the next morning, Melanie is gone and he is mistaken for a criminal and has to go to jail. Melanie is disappointed in her father, which is why she denies him and makes her way to Georgetown. A little later, his mother leaves the bail so that James can rush to Melanie, apologize and promise her to do everything possible to get to Georgetown in time to do her job interview. With the help of a team of skydivers they make it and land in time - after a daring pursuit on a golf course - for the job interview. Melanie is accepted and soon moves into her student residence. For Thanksgiving , she appears at home with her new boyfriend, Tracey.
