Johannes Cornelis Christianus "Jan" van Roessel (born April 7, 1925 in Tilburg ; † June 3, 2011 ibid) was a Dutch football player . He played in his Brabant homeland for the Tilburg clubs TSV LONGA , BVV and Willem II . Van Roessel was twice the Dutch champion and was used six times in the national team.

Club career

Van Roessel worked in various textile factories in his hometown; by profession he was a staalwever , a weaver of patterns and designs. Playing football was more important to him than work, which he initially pursued in the top division with the Tilburg club TSV LONGA in the 1940s. As a relay champion, LONGA was able to achieve third place with Roessel in the championship finals in 1944. He made his first international match for LONGA in 1949. Then he wanted to move to NAC in Breda . But LONGA prevented the competitor from strengthening itself: the club blackened its player at the KNVB that he was being paid to play football. At that time, the association led by Karel Lotsy was still firmly committed to the noble principles of amateur status, which led to van Roessel being banned for two years. The suspension was later shortened to one year, and in 1951 van Roessel joined the larger Tilburg club Willem II.

In the 1951/52 season , the center forward , who was characterized by a “hard shot and header strength”, played a major role in the fact that the Tilburg team became Dutch champions for the second time since 1916 . In the 1954/55 season, in the first year after the introduction of professional football, van Roessel was again champion with Willem II, where he was "of inestimable value" as a player. The goalgetter played for Willem II until 1958 , scoring a total of 152 goals in 168 games for the club. After his first season in the Eredivisie , he moved in 1957 to league rivals BVV in neighboring 's-Hertogenbosch . A knee injury forced him to end his career in the top division at the age of 33 after just one year. After that he was still active for the second and third LONGA team.

National team

Van Roessel completed six international matches in the Oranje Elftal ; that it was no longer due, among other things, to his suspension for paid gaming in 1950. His first appearance in the national team was on June 16, 1949, a friendly against Finland in Helsinki . In pouring rain on a smooth lawn, he crowned his debut between Rinus Schaap and Faas Wilkes in the half-forward positions with two goals. He broke his leg at a game in the South Netherlands selection in the fall of 1949, and after his suspension he only returned to the national team after his first championship with Willem II. It was on July 16, 1952 at the Olympic football tournament when he scored the opening goal to make it 1-0 after a quarter of an hour with an untenable free kick in the only appearance of the Dutch against Brazil ; however, the game in Turku was lost 5-1. He was used three more times in 1952, playing alongside stars like Abe Lenstra and Rinus Bennaars . After another international break, he came back to the Elftal in 1955 against Switzerland , but only for nine minutes: after the Swiss goalkeeper had "literally knocked him off the field", he had to be substituted for his team-mate Sjel de Bruijckere from Tilburg ; his international career ended after six appearances in which he scored five goals.

After the active time

After his semi-professional years, Jan van Roessel worked in a Tilburg foundry. In addition, he followed the games of his club Willem II until his death, sat in the stadium next to Piet de Jong , the slightly better top scorer in the club's history. Van Roessel was voted Player of the Century in the club; One of the conference rooms in the stadium is named after him. Van Roessel died on June 3, 2011 at the age of 86 from complications from a lung disease.
