Marinus "Rinus" Schaap (born February 22, 1922 in Hilversum ; † June 5, 2006 , ibid) was a Dutch football player .

Club career

The midfielder was active at Hilversumse Voetbal en Atletiek Vereniging DONAR and from 1947 to 1950 at 't Gooi Hilversum . Like many of his generation, he later went abroad because professional football had not yet been introduced in the Netherlands. He played from 1950 to the end of 1952 in France for the second division FC Toulouse and from the beginning of 1953 to 1954 for a year and a half for the Racing Club de Paris , including the second half of the 1952/53 division in Division 1 . In total, Schaap made 12 first and 49 second division appearances there, scoring six goals in the D2. After his time in France, he appeared in the Netherlands, initially for two seasons again for 't Gooi Hilversum and in the 1958/59 season for the Enschede sports club .

National team

He played 13 times for the Dutch national team . He made his debut in Orange on April 18, 1948 in Rotterdam's De Kuip against Belgium . His only goal for the Elftal he scored on June 16, 1948 in the 4-1 win in Helsinki against Finland to 0-2 in the 57th minute; then he was part of the Dutch squad at the Olympic Games , but was not used in any of the two games. By the end of 1949 he played five times for the Netherlands before he was ostracized by the KNVB as a professional - viewed as a "mortal sin" in those years - and only made his comeback in 1955, when professional football was also introduced in the Netherlands. His last appearance in the national team was on October 14, 1956 in Antwerp , again in a game against Belgium.

In March 1953, Schaap was a member of the selection of Dutch professionals playing abroad, who played against the French national team on March 12 at the Parc des Princes in Paris in Watersnoodwedstrijd in favor of the victims of the 1953 flood disaster . In front of 8,000 spectators, the Dutch won 2-1.

After the active time

After his career as a footballer, Schaap went back to his hometown Hilversum, where he died at the age of 84 after a short illness.

The municipality of Hilversum has awarded the Rinus Schaap Prijs every year since 1991 to a resident who has done voluntary work for the sport.
