The Levant Ragwurz ( Ophrys levantina ) is a kind of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). It was previously considered a subspecies of Bornmüller's Ragwurz ( Ophrys bornmuelleri ), but is now considered to be independent.
Plant description
This perennial , herbaceous plant reaches heights of between 10 and 30 cm.
The inflorescence comprises between two and eight flowers . The sepals are greenish-white, rarely also reddish in color. The lip, which is hairy all around and strongly humped, looks trapezoidal or square when viewed from above. It has a large appendage in front. The mark is H-shaped or reduced.
The flowering period extends from February to April.
Location and distribution
This species prefers open forests, garrigues and grasslands with base-rich, sometimes moist soils. In the mountains you can find them up to an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level . The distribution area extends over the Middle East , Cyprus , Levant , Rhodes , Southeast and South Anatolia .
