Friedrich I of Pfalz-Simmern, the Hunsrücker (born April 24, 1417 , † November 29, 1480 in Simmern ), was Count Palatine and Duke of Palatinate-Simmern - Sponheim .

Life

He was the eldest son of Stefan von Pfalz-Simmern-Zweibrücken (1385-1459) and Anna von Veldenz (1390-1439). After the death of his grandfather Friedrich III. von Veldenz on September 16, 1444 Friedrich got the Palatinate share in the county of Sponheim , which he ruled from Kastellaun . After the death of his father on February 14, 1459 he followed in Simmern. His brother Ludwig received the duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken and the county of Veldenz . Friedrich is considered the actual founder of the Pfalz-Simmern line and is the progenitor of the Electors of the Palatinate from 1559. He expanded the Simmern Castle as a residence. Friedrich always stood on his side in the wars of Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate . Friedrich was buried in the Ravengiersburg monastery . No tomb has been preserved.

Marriage and offspring

Friedrich I was married to Margarethe von Geldern (* August 11, 1436, † November 2, 1486). She was the daughter of Duke Arnold von Geldern and Katharina von Kleve (1417–1479), daughter of Duke Adolf II. Von Kleve . The wedding took place on August 6, 1454 in Lobith .
