Eleonora de 'Medici ( Eleonora Maria di Francesco de' Medici ; born February 28, 1567 in Florence , † September 9, 1611 in Cavriana ) was a daughter of Francesco I , Grand Duke of Tuscany , and Archduchess Johanna of Austria . She was a member of the Medici family . Through her marriage to Vincenzo I. Gonzaga , she was Duchess of Mantua and Montferrat from August 14, 1587 to September 9, 1611 .

Life

Eleonora was born in Florence on February 28, 1567, the eldest daughter of eight children. Their baptism took place that same year.

It was initially assumed that Eleonora would be Henry III. , Duke of Anjou, son of Henry II of France and Caterina de 'Medici . In 1570 it was feared Eleonora had smallpox but it did not, she just had a fever from which she was recovering. Her parents and grandfather Cosimo sent her bottle of holy water when she was recovering from her illness.

In 1574, when Eleonora was seven years old, her grandfather Cosimo died and her father became Grand Duke of Florence. In 1578, when Eleonora was eleven, her mother died and her father later married Bianca Cappello .

Eleonora had seven younger siblings. One of her sisters, Maria de 'Medici , became Queen of France and was the mother of Louis XIII. Eleonora had another sister, Anna, who died at the age of 14. The rest of Eleonora's siblings died in childhood.
